Exploring Possibilities

To Every Thing There is a Season

  • 1145506_89489674 Spiritual reality is full of paradoxes. It's part and parcel with the existence of two separate realities. There is the linear every day world we all grew up in; in whose reality we were indoctrinated. Then on the other side of the coin, there exists the non-linear nature of the spiritual paradigm; the world of quantum field. Both are true and valid within their own realm.

Not long ago I wrote about peeling the proverbial onion and everything I said was valid; within its own reality. There comes a time however, in the life of a spiritually committed aspirant, when one realizes that peeling the onion is simply the ego's ploy to get more juice out of an issue. The ego/mind can think up endless variations and nuances about a particular event and like the mouse on the wheel, we get nowhere. At that point it is the act of surrender itself which becomes the work. Surrender becomes the mudra, a simple state of awareness where one simply releases all that arises.

Every once in a while something surfaces which may catch our attention and while it may take a while, eventually we understand that it is simply the ego itself which refuses to surrender. In reality all one has to surrender is the energy/juice which the ego derives from all its shenanigans.

Often it is a sense of guilt which runs us, as it is a very powerful tool which societies use to control its members. In most instances all that is required is a simple regret. It is important to distinguish between one's motive at the time of the offense. If one did something for the sake of evil it is very different than if one committed the same act out of perceived need, or it simply and perhaps stupidly, seemed like the right thing to do at the time. Wallowing around in guilt is another tactic the ego uses to get juice. It cares not whether it's positive or negative juice; to the ego it's all the same.

Meditation is another area where we have a dichotomy. On the one hand meditation opens us to the world of spirit, to the divine nature within ourselves, but mediation itself is sort of a split. There is the time of meditation which is separate from the rest of one's reality. Contemplation on the other hand brings Divinity into ones' everyday reality; it is a meditation of life itself. Just like the scuba diver is surrounded by water, where every move he makes is through the medium of water, so too does the contemplator move through the non-linear reality of the quantum field, A.K.A. Divinity.

When one does everything as an offering to Divinity life becomes a walking meditation or prayer. Brother Lawrence, the 17th Century Carmelite Monk brought this practice to the world in his treatise "The Practice of the Presence of God". He found a way to make the various jobs he was given at the monastery part of his spiritual practice, turning what might have been drudgery, into a joyous offering. Dr. David R. Hawkins, wrote a much shorter 2 page article; "The Realization of the Presence of God", outlining what he calls the "straight and narrow path to enlightenment". It too outlines the path to bring Divinity into everyday living.

Stepping into Divinity as an everyday state of consciousness has its own set of peculiarities. You may very well find yourself in a state of bliss where such everyday practices like eating and earning a living seems frivolous and unimportant. The emotional rollercoaster rides of your friends and family may appear totally silly. No one except for the serious spiritual seeker will understand you and your family may seek to have you committed. What's more you may radiate so much love that people will avoid you as a deviate or sexual predator. Your love will have nothing to do with sex but people project themselves into every situation.

There are, of course, other paradoxes. Those who live in the blissful, nonlinear state of unconditional love, have no desire to become embroiled in the trauma and drama of most peoples' existence. As a consequence they often spend a lot of time alone, but not lonely, filled with the bliss of Divine love united energetically with all of creation.

At each stage of one's evolution, the appropriateness of particular thoughts, actions or practices may be entirely different from those preceding or following. Some will coincide with age and experience in life, while at other times it's of a spiritual nature. So don't be surprised or put off by the need to change what you thought was your true path or practice. Be open to looking at the next step in your evolution. Know that sometimes you may revisit things at a deeper level and at other times it is simply about letting everything go.
